Past participles are used to describe the nature or states of things.
La tienda está abierta.
The store is open.La puerta está cerrada.
The door is closed.Rene está dormido.
Rene is asleep.Paco está despierto.
Paco is awake.Esta es una carta escrita á mano.
This is a hand written letter.Ahora, el problema está resuelto.
Now, the problem is solved.Los planes secretos están escondidos detrás de la pintura.
The secret plans are hidden behind the painting.
They are also used to form the present perfect.
Él ha dicho la verdad.
He has said the truth.Nosotros hemos comido todas las galletas.
We have eaten all the cookies.
