Dropping of the E
Originally the following adverbs were regular. Over the centuries, because the e did not affect the adverb's pronunciation, it was dropped from the spelling. This has occurred to most adverbs that are constructed from feminine adjectives that end in two vowels.

Exception: gaiement gaily
A few adverbs commemorate the dropped e with a circumflex over the final u.
